COLOMBIA: Insight into Farc's strategy

A critical insight into the Farc's strategy — and its weak points — was obtained by the Colombian military in an operation conducted on 5 January in which six Farc guerrillas were killed. One of them was Eliseo Mancilla Garcés ('Negro Arturo'), second-in-command of the Frente 51, a unit charged with maintaining the Farc's supply lines and providing security to the organisation's military chief, Jorge Briceño Suárez ('Mono Jojoy') when he is on the move. On Mancilla's computer the military found a set of directives issued in mid-2009 by the Farc's paramount leader, Guillermo León Sáenz ('Alfonso Cano').
